Sound + Light: Sojourn (Bring Light)

Title: Sojourn (Bring Light)

Our first installation was titled Sojourn because of the nature of the piece, and the nature of our stay in Paducah.  The definition of the word sojourn is "a temporary stay."  In this piece, viewers attending the show chose to enter an environment of our creation for a temporary stay.

Layout: Window front gallery space, and studio/installation space in the back

We chose to use the window front gallery space to display eye-catching Mylar sculptures, and a few of my new drawings.  The gallery also served as a place for mingling and conversation before and after viewing the environment in the studio.  At the entrance to the hallway, attendees were invited to take a flashlight down the hallway to the studio door and use it inside.  Sounds from Jesse's electronic composition could be heard coming from the back of the building while standing in the gallery, making it pretty irresistible to go and see what was going on.

Event Reminder

Simple. Singular.

Reflective Mylar Film | 2 mil & 5 mil

Mirror Mylar is our material of choice for our first project.  It can be ordered by the roll from a variety of companies.  We purchased ours from Nielsen EnterprisesI worked with this material during my senior year at Herron in Indianapolis, and wished to push some of my discoveries further during this residency.  During this installation, Jesse and I are exploring the complexities of this simple, singular material.  Jesse is producing sounds that reflect the material's eerie, ethereal qualities.  He is experimenting with repetitive sounds that mimic my way of working in an obsessively repetitive manner.  The project is coming together nicely.

Materials: Mylar film, Mylar tissue, and double-sided tape

At A.I.R. Studio

Day(s) 1-3

Paducah, Kentucky
Hello.  This is our third full day of our month long arts residency at A.I.R. Studio Paducah.  The residency is located in Paducah, Kentucky.  Paducah is a town of approximately 25,000 located in Western Kentucky.  While its initial appearance is typical of a small town, it is well worth exploring further into the downtown areas of the city if you are in the area.  Paducah is the site of a successful Artist Relocation Program, initiated in the year 2000.  You can read more about this program here and here.  Despite the difficulties that every town faced during the recent economic depression, this program remains a model for increasing economic growth in a city through the arts.

That being said, Jesse and I are thoroughly happy that we have chosen to stay and work at A.I.R. Studio for a month.  It is allowing us to give our undivided attention to our work, as well as providing an opportunity to experience living and working in a unique and vibrant arts community.

A.I.R. Studio
This is a wonderful space.  If you have an opportunity to do a residency here, please do so.  It is spacious, clean, well-lit, and entirely pleasant to occupy.
